On 11 April 2010 we had a chance to host Mr. Mike  Iliff and his wife Wanda from Columbia, USA, together with Ms. Kate and Ms. Tip for the trip to our Tee-Kay-Kee coffee plantation in Om Koi district, 3 hours drive northwest of Chiang Mai.  They also had visited our Om Koi coffee hostel for local students.  Unfortunately, they did not meet any student because of semester break. คุณไมค์ และภรรย แวนด้า จากรัฐโคลัมเบีย สหรัฐอเมริกา พร้อมกับ คุณเคท และคุณทิพย์ ติดต่อเรามาเพื่อจะขอไปดูไร่กาแฟของเรา เราเลือกไปที่ไร่ที่หมู่บ้าน ทีเกะคี อ.อมก๋อย เพราะคุณไมค์ต้องการไปเยี่ยมชมหอพักกาแฟของเราที่อมก๋อยด้วย  แต่การไปนี้ เป็นช่วงที่โรงเรียนปิดเทอมอยู่ จึงไม่มีโอกาสได้พบกับเด็กๆในหอพัก
We have promoted the villagers to grow coffee under forest cover instead of planting in the opened land in order to conserve the environment and ecosystem.  In some cases, we even encourage growing large trees to generate the shades for growing coffee.  This way, organic matters, such as leaves and branches are allowed to decay naturally leading to fertile soil.  Lives within the soil as earthworms and microorganisms help to enrich the soil quality.  Moreover, adding manure as organic fertilizer also help enhancing the soil.  We also suggest the villagers to raise chicken in the planting area as pest control.  Therefore, our coffee is purely organic produced coffee. เรา ส่งเสริมให้ชาวบ้านปลูกกาแฟใต้ต้นไม้ใหญ่ เราไม่ส่งเสริมให้ปลูกในที่โล่งแจ้ง หากเป็นที่โล่งแจ้ง จะต้องปลูก ต้นไม้ใหญ่เสียก่อนเพื่อให้ได้ร่มเงา หลังจากนั้น จึงเริ่มต้นปลูก ต้นกาแฟ การทีต้นกาแฟอยู่ใต้ร่มเงานั้นทำให้ต้นกาแฟมีสุขภาพดี และ มีภูมิต้านทานจากโรคต่างๆ ใบไม้ใบหญ้าที่ตกบนพื้น ก็ไม่ให้เผา ให้เก็บเอาไว้ให้คลุมพื้นดินให้เย็น ให้ใบไม้เน่าเปื่อยเอง ตามธรรมชาติ ดินจะได้มีชีวิต ไส้เดือนจะได้ช่วยพรวนดินให้ต้นกาแฟ เสริมด้วย การใช้ปุ๋ยคอกที่มีอยู่แล้วในหมู่บ้าน เป็นครั้งคราว ให้เลี้ยงไก่แล้วปล่อยให้หากิน ในไร่กาแฟจะได้ช่วยกินแมลง ที่หลงมาในไร่กาแฟ กาแฟของเรา จึงเป็นกาแฟ ที่ปลูกแบบธรรมชาติอย่างแท้จริงทุกกระบวนการ

During the trip, we briefly informed them about the start of our project, Metal Drum Coffee.  Original concept was to help generate additional family income among the villagers and to conserve the surrounded forests which has been extensively exploited.

 ขณะที่เราเดินทางนั้น เรามีโอกาสได้อธิบายถึงโครงการหอพัก ที่กลุ่มกาแฟมโหระทึกที่เราได้เริ่มต้น ขึ้น เราได้เล่าความเป็นมาอย่างคร่าวๆว่า เริ่มแรกเราคิดเพียงว่า จะหาทางให้ชาวบ้านมีรายได้เสริมจากอาชีพ ที่มีอยู่และอนุรักษ์ป่าไม้ที่อยู่รอบๆหมู่บ้าน ซึ่งก็ถูกทำลายไปมากแล้ว

4 years ago, as we were out for community service with the mobile clinic, we discovered many of villagers suffered from numbness at tip of finger or at hands or legs. We had acknowledged that they have been using insecticides in the tomato plantation for years. Although they had derived fluctuated income from tomato, but they had to face with sickness and medical expenses in some years later. Even there will be numbers of doctors and nurses, but still they will never be enough to cover all cases. For the health, nothing will be better than prevention. We also knew that the doctors’ team deeply wanted to provide knowledge to the villagers in self healthcare as well.

 เมื่อ 4 ปีก่อน ขณะที่เราไปกับคณะคลิ นิกเคลื่อนที่ เราพบว่าหลายคนมีอาการชา ที่ปลายนิ้ว บางคนชาทั้งแขนหรือทั้งขา เป็นต้น เราทราบมาว่า ชาวบ้านจำเป็นต้องใช้ยาฆ่าแมลง ในแปลง มะเขือเทศของเขามาหลายปีแล้ว เราเห็นว่า ถึงแม้ว่าเขาจะมีรายได้ จากมะเขือเทศที่ เขาปลูก อาจจะได้ราคาดีมั่งไม่ดีมั่ง แต่สุดท้ายแล้ว จะต้องจ็บป่วย และต้องเสียกับค่ายาในอีก ไม่กี่ปีต่อมา ถึงจะมีทีมหมอและพยาบาลเท่าไหร่ ก็คงไม่เพียงพอ สำหรับสุขภาพแล้วการป้องกันดีกว่าการรักษา เราทราบดีว่า ทีมหมอเองลึกๆแล้ว ก็ต้องการให้ความรู้ในการดูแลสุข ภาพตัวเองให้ กับชาวบ้านเหมือนกัน
We began to mobilize the coffee planter pioneers to plant coffee as the pilots through procurement of plant seedlings, because it will be very difficult to let the villagers to grow coffee by themselves. Few years later, the neighbors saw that coffee cultivation had not been a hard job. The farmers had not to work in the sun for all day, also no need to bring the products for sell in the town, because there is a buying center in the village. By-product was the conservation of forest and watershed for the next generation so that they will be able to collect products from the forest nearby. At present, we have more than 200 members in the area and will expand for more. เรา เริ่มรวบรวมสมาชิกผู้ปลูกกาแฟ รุ่นรุ่นบุกเบิกเหล่านี้ เริ่มปลูกกาแฟนำร่องไปก่อน โดยเราจัดหาต้นกล้าให้ เพราะอยู่ๆจะให้ชาวบ้านเริ่มปลูกเลยนั้น ยากมากๆ หลังจากนี้นไม่กี่ปีเพื่อนบ้านเห็นว่า การปลูกกาแฟเป็นงานที่ไม่หนักมาก ไม่ต้องไปตากแดดทั้งวัน ไม่ต้องลงมาขายในตัวเมือง เพราะเรามีศูนย์รับซื้อในหมู่บ้านอยู่แล้ว ผลพลอยได้ก็คือ เป็นการอนุรักษ์ป่าไม้ และป่าต้นน้ำ เพื่อลูกหลานของตน สามารถไปหาของป่า ในป่าข้างหมู่บ้านได้ ขณะนี้ เรามีสมาชิกประมาณกว่า 200 คนในพื้นที่เหล่านี้  และกำลังขยายออกไป
In reality, the watershed forest will be very much useful for people in the low land and urban if it is exist, but we have to let the villagers to see their benefit as priority. ความจริงแล้ว หากป่าต้นน้ำยังคงอยู่ จะเป็นผลดีต่อผู้ที่อาศัยอยู่พื้นที่ที่ต่ำกว่าและคนในเมืองด้วย แต่เบี้องต้น เราจะต้องให้ชาวบ้านเห็นผลประ โยชน์ที่ตัวเขาเองจะได้รับเสียก่อนเป็นอันดับแรก
After we united together for a certain time, we discussed among the coffee growing members that our union should have been more beneficial for our society. A hostel or dormitory project is opened for children who live in underprivileged areas where our most members live to have better opportunity in education due to living in isolated areas, some area do not even have a secondary school. หลังจากเรารวมตัวกัน ได้ระยะหนึ่ง เราพูดคุยกับสมาชิกกาแฟของเรา ว่า การรวมตัวของเรานี้ น่าจะทำประโยชน์ ให้สังคมได้มากกว่านี้ และสิ่งแรกที่เราเริ่มต้นปฎิบัติคือ การเปิดหอพัก เพื่อให้เด็กด้อยโอกาส ที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ ที่สมาชิกของเราอาศัยอยู่ จะได้มีโอกาสทางการศึกษา เนื่องจากพื้นที่ ที่เราเข้าไปนั้น อยู่ในพื้นที่ห่างไกลความเจริญ และไม่มีโรงเรียนในระดับมัธยมศึกษาบางที่ไม่มีแม้แต่โรงเรียนประถมศึกษา
In 2009 our awareness are raised by information given by children who want to pursue further in their education regards of limitation of the school. Some of the student apprised that the parents try to pushed the teenagers to get married after they finished their 6th grade, means they will become a young parent at average of age 13 or 14.This facts truly hurts us because after completed grade 6. when compare with age he or she still can not take care of themselves or not yet able to make any proper decision We used to ask the parents why they do not want their children to continue studying for secondary school. Some of them complained that they scared to allow their children to study in the town, because it may be risky for them to become deteriorated. We were trying to figure out and find ways for these children to study in higher level, bring in better quality of life. Primarily, we asked our coffee growing members, whom we trusted and able to rely on, to fill in this role to look after the children who to study in town including guiding them on morality and sustained themselves not to become a libertine. ในปี ค.ศ. 2009 เราเริ่มตระหนักมากขึ้น เมื่อเด็กๆหลายคนมาบอกเราว่า ต้องการเรียนในระดับมัธยมศึกษา เพราะในหมู่บ้านมีถึงแค่ชั้น ป.6 เด็กบางคนมาบอกเราว่าพ่อแม่ให้แต่งงานหลังจากจบชั้นประถมปีที่ 6 หากว่าเราปล่อยให้วิถีชีวิตลักษณะนี้ดำ เนินต่อไป หลังจากเด็กเหล่านี้จบจากโรงเรียนประจำหมู่บ้าน 1-2 ปี เขาก็ต้องกลายเป็นพ่อหรือแม่ที่มีอายุแค่ 13-14 ปีเท่านั้น สิ่งนี้สะเทือนใจเรามาก เมื่อเรามาสะท้อนใจกับลูกหลานเราเอง เด็กที่จบชั้นประถมปีที 6 ดูแลเอาตัวเองยังไม่ได้เลย เราลองถามผู้ปกครองว่า ทำไมไม่ให้ลูกไปเรียนต่อในระดับมัธยมศึกษา มีผู้ปกครองจำนวนหนึ่งมาบ่นกับเราว่า ไม่กล้าให้ลูกไปเรียนในเมือง เพราะเกรงว่าลูกจะเสียคน เราจึงพยายามคิด และหาโอกาสให้เด็กๆเหล่านี้ ได้มีโอกาสในการเรียนต่อในระดับที่สูงขึ้น เพื่อคุณ ภาพชีวิตที่ดีขี้นของพวกเขา โดยในเบื้องต้น เราขอให้ทีมงานกาแฟของเราที่ไว้ใจได้ มาคอยดูแล อบรมจริยธรรมให้เด็กๆ ในเด็กวัยรุ่นเหล่านี้ที่ลงมาเรียนหนังสือในในตัวเมือง เพื่อเด็กๆเหล่านี้จะได้รับทั้งการศึกษาและจริยธรรมในเวลาเดียวกัน.
