| เดือนนี้เป็นเดือนแห่งพระพร สำหรับหอพักกาแฟอมก๋อยอีกเดือนหนึ่ง เพราะก่อนหน้านี้มีเพื่อนจาก YFC จากตะวันออกกลาง มาช่วยสร้างห้องน้ำชายให้กับหอพักของเรา และวันนี้เพื่อนจาก YFC สหรัฐอเมริกา ก็กำลังสร้างห้องน้ำหญิงให้กับเราอีก วันนี้เป็นวันที่พี่น้องเหล่านี้จะต้องเดินทางกลับแล้ว แต่ห้องน้ำที่เขาตั้งใจมาสร้างไม่เสร็จ เพราะว่าเวลาสำหรับกิจกรรมของทั้งสองกลุ่มมีไม่เพียงพอ จึงต้องให้เป็นหน้าที่ของช่างที่ทั้งสองกลุ่มจ้างไว้ทำให้เสร็จต่อไป ช่วงเวลาเดียวกันคริสตจักร นิวโฮปของคุณไมเคิล ไอลีฟ ได้ให้งบประมาณสำหรับสร้างแท้งน้ำสำหรับหอพักกาแฟอมก๋อยอีก จึงทำให้ช่วงนี้มองไปทางไหนก็มีแต่การก่อสร้าง |

This month is another month of blessing for the Omkoi Coffee Hostel. Previously, our friend from YFC Middle East came to help us build the boy’s restroom and today, friends from YFC USA are building the girl’s restroom for us. Today they have to go back, however the bathrooms they built are not finished yet due to the lack of time. So these projects will be completed by builders whom both groups have hired. Around this time, New Hope Baptist Church, GA gave us the funds for building a water tank for the hostel. Everywhere in the hostel compound we are seeing construction. |

| วันนี้เป็นวันที่คณะจากเดเวลเล็มเฮลท์ ประเทศฮอลแลนด์ จะมาถึงอมก๋อย และจะมาอยู่กับเราประมาณ สองอาทิตย์ คุณยอห์น บาร์ส เคยเป็นครูสอนที่สถาบั้นนี้มาก่อน ก่อนหน้านี้คุณยอห์นเคยมาเที่ยวที่หอพักกาแฟอมก๋อยกับคุณเคทประมาณ 2 ครั้ง และเคยมาถามถึงความจำเป็นของหอพัก ขณะนั้นเด็กส่วนหนึ่งของเราพักอยู่ในอาคารที่เราสร้างกันเองกับเด็กๆ และเมื่อเวลาผ่านไปประมาณหนึ่งปี กำแพงและประตูของอาคารหลังหลังนั้น เริ่มมีรอยแยกและไหวไปมาทุกครั้งเมื่อเราเปิด-ปิดประตู เราต้องบอกเด็กๆให้ระมัดระวังในการเปิด-ปิดประตู คุณยอห์นเห็นว่ามีความจำเป็นจริงๆ สำหรับความปลอดภัยของเด็ก จึงประสานไปยังเพื่อนๆของเขาที่ประเทศฮอลแลนด์ จึงเกิดโครงการอาคารสองชั้นหลังนี้ขึ้นมา โดยลำพังแล้วเราไม่เคยคิดที่จะมีอาคารขนาดใหญ่แบบนี้มาก่อน |

Today friends from De Willem Helpt, Holland, arrived in Omkoi and they will be staying with us for two weeks. Mr. Jan Baars has taught at this academy before. Mr. Jan had visited the Omkoi Coffee Hostel a few times prior with Ms. Kate and AAI Team and had asked about the needs of the hostel. At that time some of hostel children were staying in the building that we had built by ourselves. A year later, the walls and door began to crack and separate from each other and shake every time we would open and close the door. Jan saw this as a safety hazard for the children so he contacted his friends in Holland and thus began the Two Storage Building Project. We would not have been able to build such a huge building by ourselves. |

วันนี้เป็นสุดท้ายที่เพื่อนๆจาก YFC สหรัฐอเมริกาจะอยู่กับเราที่อมก๋อย สำหรับรายงานที่เพื่อนจากYFC ที่มาช่วยสร้างห้องน้ำให้กับหอพักกาแฟอมก๋อยนั้น ผมจะต้องเขียนแยกอีกบันทึกหนึ่ง เพราะว่ามีรายละเอียดมากเช่นกัน

Today is the last day that the Team YFC will stay with us in Omkoi. I will write a separate report later about the work the YFC team has done.

After our friends from YFC USA left, on Saturday, the children continued the work assigned to them. |

This afternoon our friends from Holland arrived in Omkoi by bus. After settling in, it’s time for diversion (games & activities) led by Kate, Tip, and Jan.

We prepared our meeting room for girls to sleep and we rented a house for the boys. Kate and Tip prepared breakfast for both Holland’s team and hostel’s children. |

อาคารที่หลังนี้(๑) เป็นอาคารที่เด็กผู้หญิงของหอพักนี้เคยยพักมาก่อน ในขณะที่เรารื้อหอพักไม้ไผ่หลังแรกของเราที่ผุพังนั้นออก และกำ ลังสร้างเป็นอาคารคอนกรีตแทน เมื่อชั้นล่างของอาคารคอนกรีตสามารถเข้าไปอยู่ได้แล้ว เด็กผู้หญิงก็ย้ายเข้าไปพักที่นั่น ส่วนเด็กผู้ชายที่เคยพักอยู่หน้าห้องพักของผู้ดูแลหอพัก จึงสามารถย้ายเข้ามาพักในอาคารหลังนี้

Our hostel girls had stayed in this building (Building 1) while we were tearing down our first rotten bamboo building and constructing the concrete building (Building 2). After the ground floor of the first two-story building (B. 2) was completed, the girls moved in. The boys then moved from the front of the hostel parent’s house to this old building(B. 1)

A year after we built this building (B.1), the walls began to separate from the posts and door frames. We could see the walls shake when we opened and closed the door.

Actually both the boys and the girls were very attached to this building. When we told them to move to the new building, they did not want to. Some of them asked, “Can we continue staying here?” But the day has arrived that this building has to be torn down to construct a stronger, bigger building to meet our needs. |

This group came to build the new building (B.3) so we had to tear down the first building in order to build the new one. Both boys and girls did everything they were assigned but since there were more people than work, I asked some of them to resume the unfinished work from the YFC USA group. |

As for the hostel children, I asked them to dry mix just cement and sand and place them in sacks and take them to the place where we want to make the wall and then stack these sacks as a wall close to the ditch and then fill it in with dirt to create more space for the hostel since our space is limited. |

We did not have the funds to make this sack wall. However if hadn’t, we wouldn’t have enough land to constuct the 8×16 meter building for the boys and girls bathrooms. At the same time, friends who intended to help us didn’t have any work and they came to me and asked what work I would have for them to do. The sack wall behind the bathroom became the spare project for those who needed work. |

There is sand and cement mixed in each sack. Then they are nailed together with iron rods to hold them together. When it rains or when the sacks get wet, it will harden itself. We filled the area in between the toilets and this wall with things that are not needed such as brick block, garbage, sand, and soil to make the ground level. The children can use this area to dry their clothes. |

While the workers are plastering the walls, I had some of the hostel boys study how to do the plaster work. Then I asked some of the boys who learn quickly to try plastering. |

Since I knew that the entrance way we have been using would be closed soon, we would have to make our own entrance way in order to continue the construction. This would allow trucks to bring materials into the construction area. |

วันนี้ผู้รับเหมายังไม่ได้มาดูและวัดพื้นที่การก่อสร้าง เราจึงไม่รู้ว่าจะช่วยขุดหลุมเสาตอหม้อให้ตรงไหน ผมจึงต้องให้พี่น้องจากฮอลแลนด์มาช่วยขุดทำทางไปก่อน และอีกส่วนหนึ่งผมก็ขอทำงานก่อบล๊อกห้องน้ำหรือฉาบปูน

The builder hasn’t come to measure the construction site yet so we did not know how or where we should dig the holes for the posts. Instead, I asked the group to help make the entrance way; the other group I asked to lay block and plaster walls. |

The Holland team meets every morning and then divides into smaller groups. Around 10:00am, they begin working until the end of the day. The hostel students go to school at 7:45am. and return at 4 pm. The children join in, helping with what they can do. |

The builder still did not come to see the construction site yet since we hadn’t told him the exact date to begin construction. Jan told me that some of the group would like to chop grass at the food project so today we divided the team into two groups. |

We just demolished the old building yesterday and the constructor has not determined where to dig the holes for the foundation posts. The team asked me what they should do so I had to find other work for them. |

Today the constructor came and marked the perimeter of the construction area and determined the locations to dig foundation post holes. Team Holland then divided into groups to dig these holes. |

After attempting to dig the holes for a while, they discovered the ground was too rocky to dig with the tools we had, so we needed to consult with the constructor. The constructor contacted the backhoe tractor, but after he saw the project, he refused to do it saying that the backhoe cannot dig holes in rocky ground. Finally, the constructor had to dig these holes with an air hammer by himself. |

Today is Sunday and it is Team Holland’s holiday as well. We agreed to go to Wang Kwai Puak waterfall, which is a 30-minute drive by truck. |

| เพื่อนๆจากฮอลแลนด์บอกกับเราว่า ต้องการไปเยี่ยมน้องๆที่หอพักกาแฟมอเคล่อคี ซึ่งเป็นอีกหอพักหนึ่งที่เราเริ่มต้นปีเดียวกับหอพักที่อมก๋อย จริงๆแล้วเดือนนี้เป็นฤดูฝน การเดินทางไปที่หมู่บ้านมอเคล่อคีไม่ใช่เรื่องง่าย เพราะเมื่อถนนลูกรังเปียกฝนมันจะอ่อนตัวลง โดยเฉพาะช่วงที่เป็นทางชันถนนจะเละและลื่น เพราะล้อรถต้องตะกุยขึ้น บ่อยๆเข้าก็จะกลายเป็นร่องลึก และกลายเป็นถนนดินโคลนในที่สุด |

Team Holland informed me that they would like to visit Maw Kler Kee Hostel which is another hostel that we founded the same year as the hostel in Omkoi. Actually this month is still the rainy season so it is not easy to go to Maw Kler Kee village. When the dirt road gets wet, it becomes muddy and it is especially difficult for a vehicle to climb the steep roads. |

I knew that it would not be easy to make this trip and I was not sure that I could find a truck to go because it is hard on the truck. But they still had intentions of going, so I counted the number of passengers and checked if they were willing to push the truck if we happen to get stuck in the mud. |

The next morning at Omkoi, we were all smelling diesel fumes. The children came and told me that my truck’s tank was leaking. The diesel tank must have been bumped by something or was hit by a stone. One of tires was cut quite deep by a stone. Today is a holiday for the team, but Mr. Art and some students were kind enough to wash the truck for me. |

The reason for this mistake was because we couldn’t hire a professional to do this project. Most professionals prefer to do all the construction by themselves, but this was an activity of YFC Team. |

The reason I decided against this iron door and frame was because the doors could not be closed completely. The angles were not correct and there were gaps between the door and the frame. Adjusting the steel door and the frame would not be easy to do. Some of the hinges were on the inside and some were on the outside. They were not compatible with the tiles that YFC bought for us so I decided to replace all the steel frames and doors with wooden ones. We learned that by not hiring a professional constructor from the beginning wastes our time and funds. |

Another lesson we will remember in the future is to be sure that the cement blocks are straight when building walls otherwise it takes a lot of extra cement to create a smooth, level wall. |

Making the sack wall behind the hostel created some extra expenses. If we wouldn’t have leveled this area, the foundation for the bathrooms would not be level. Although we have free man power, the sand, cement, and sacks still cost a lot for us. At the time nobody knew but it was not the project that I had intended for them to do. Since the building could not be constructed as planned, I had to provide other work for them.

I asked a friend to move this roof frame to the other side of the hostel to be the roof for our kitchen and sink that we hope to build someday. |

Mr. William Miller from GTO arrived this evening after the team from Holland departed. He tries to visit both hostels when he gets a chance. GTO is our first and main supporter with 25,000 baht a month for both the Omkoi and Maw Kler Kee hostels for three years. Although it was not enough cover the all expenses for approximately 70 children, we know that only by the grace of God were we able to come through the third year. This year, 2012, will be the fourth year for both hostel ministries so please join us in prayer for this year. Our goal is to continue to help more children, so we need more alliances to join hands. |

Today it’s only the hostel children here, but they only have time to help in the morning and evening because they have to go to school. I asked the boys to touch-up the paintjob and also to paint the window frames. Some of the girls cleaned paint off the windows. |

Since our neighbors needed to make their fence on the side we have been using as a vehicle entrance, we no longer have an entrance way or car parking. The land beside the road hasn’t been used for anything yet, so I think we will use it as car parking. |

The area where we plan to construct a new car parking has many large pieces of concrete beneath it. Man power can not move them as we have tried already. I will have to hire a backhoe to adjust this slope area and also a truck to remove the concrete from our hostel. |
